We went to Hamvention in Xenia, OH (USA) this weekend. Really enjoyed it, and took in as much as our wobbly legs could carry us to. The Begali key he won at the DX Dinner is so beautiful. Being the appreciative guy he is, he went by the Begali booth to thank
Bruna Begali (from Italy) personally for donating the key to be given away in a lucky-draw. They make the most useful and beautiful Morse Code keys. I have one already that Danny gave me for Christmas. <br>

""Carol and I are both ham radio operators. We were each licensed when we were 15 and have a combined 132 years of ham radio experience under our belts.<br>
This weekend, we attended the world's largest ham radio gathering with about 35,000 of our closest friends. We each have attended the Dayton (Ohio) Hamvention for about 50 years, missing a few years when "life got in the way".<br>
In the early days, I was often staffing a booth and had little time to look around. But when I did, I wanted to see the latest and greatest products on display, Later, I wanted to attend forums to learn about equipment, techniques and methods to improve my
operating.<br>
More recently, seeing old friends became the highlight. Attending dinners such as the "DX Dinner" at a downtown hotel is a highlight. As Carol puts it, we get to rub elbows with the "rock stars" of ham radio.<br>
And this year, I won a new key for Morse code at the DX Dinner. Yes, we still use morse code.<br>
The key I won is a four pound Italian sculptured piece of art. I was able to thank Bruna Begali personally for this great prize. " 17 May, 2026</div>

May 16, 2026 I was so honored to see and get a picture with Italian YL ham IV3FSG, Elvira Simoncini at the Hamvention SWODXA Dinner tonight in Dayton. She was chosen for the DX Hall of Fame. She goes all over Africa on DXpeditions, giving thousands of contacts
to the worlds amateurs. Im so glad to see her honored in this way. I have worked her in 7 different African countries: Guinea, Madagascar, Uganda, Comoros, Central African Republic, St. Helena, and Senegal. Congratulations, Elvira.<br>

80 YEARS OLD AND 64 YEARS AS A HAM RADIO OPERATOR</div>

Amateur radio has played an important role in Carol Fraley Laferty's life over the years. In fact, last September 28th marked 64 years since she joined as a beginner, as a teenager.<br>
<br>
Her older brother, Fred Fraley, W4DF (SK), was the person responsible for putting her on the air in September 1957, at the age of 15. They lived on a farm near Dungannon, Virginia, in Scott County, a good place to put up long-wire antennas.<br>
<br>
She and her father, Kermit Fraley K4SAB (SK), took their novice exams at the same time. She received the call sign K4SAF, which she has used for over six decades. The whole family used Fred's station, which he generously shared along with an old Halicrafters
receiver, later upgrading to a Viking Ranger and an HQ-110.<br>

<div style="direction: ltr;">She met her husband, Don, K4GFY (SK), on the radio in 1957. He was her second contact on the first day she nervously called CQ after receiving her license. They spoke for three years on CW and by phone before meeting in person.<br>
They were married for 53 years until his death in 2015. Their son, Don Laferty, Jr., who lives in Wisconsin, now holds his father's license, K4GFY. Their daughter, Debbie, lives in Tucson, Arizona, with her only grandson, Kai, 15. Their youngest son, Neil,
lives in Chicago.<br>
<br>
The first years of her marriage were dedicated to raising the couple's three children. Don retired from active duty in the United States Air Force in 1975. Carol was then able to finish college and teach economics and computer science at the high school level
for many years.<br>
Amateur radio had to take a back seat. She retired in 2004 from Bath County High School in Kentucky, but continued teaching computer science part-time at Morehead State University.<br>
In the last 17 years, she returned to amateur radio with full force. The magic of communication she felt as a teenager in the mountains of southwest Virginia has not diminished. She received her Extra Class license in 2000. Carol and her husband had separate
radio stations. Perhaps that was the secret to the longevity of their amateur radio marriage for so many years, until Don's passing. Carol's radio station boasts much more advanced radios, peripherals, and antennas. He uses a TenTec Omni V, primarily for CW
operation at 25 words per minute.<br>
<br>
She also uses a Yaesu FTdx101D, an Elecraft KPA 500 Amp, and an LDG Autotuner. A series of dipoles hang outside. He is fortunate to have enough surface area for a 160-meter full-wave dipole. Other dipoles include a DX80 for 75, 40, and 30 meters. He also has
a triband Mosley antenna at a height of 18 meters. He operates in CW and digital modes, and occasionally SSB. During the Coronavirus pandemic, he achieved awards he never dreamed of. She completed the DXCC and worked in every state in the USA on 160, 80, 40,
30, 20, 17, and 15 meters, in Mixed, Digital, and CW modes. The most difficult goal to achieve was the WAS-YL, which she completed in February of this year. Carol was treasurer of YLRL and is a member of SKCC, QCWA, and FISTS. Besides radio, she enjoys music,
especially bluegrass, and family history. She turned 80 years old on September 30th.</div>

>From August 1522, 2026, Henri OJ0JR and Anne OJ0YL plan to activate Mrket Reef, bringing this rare OJ0 entity back on the air for DXers around the world.<br>
OH2YL Anne Lahdes & OH3JR Henri Olander from Finland, landed on Mrket Reef on August 15, 2026 and were soon QRV on 30m.<br>
Henri, OJ0JR, and Anne, OJ0YL, went QRT, August 21, at 12:00 UTC due to deteriorating weather conditions.<br>

VK2KAA Joan (Jo) Helene Harris OAM passed away peacefully on Saturday 30 August 2025 aged 91 years. Jo was a lifelong resident of Ku-ring-gai, north of Sydney, Australia. Her legacy is spun into the fabric of Wahroonga, where she lived most of her life and
raised her family.<br>
Jo's life was marked by service, story-telling, and a profound dedication to preserving local history. She was a long-standing member of the Ku-ring-gai Historical Society, where she played a pivotal role in documenting and sharing the stories of the region.
Her passion for early Australian wireless communication and her engaging talks on the subject were cherished by many.<br>
Jo was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2018, a testament to her lifelong commitment to enriching the lives of others. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to community history and civic life, she was honoured as the Ku-ring-gai
Local Woman of the Year in 2021.<br>
Licensed 1989. A former WICEN NSW (Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network New South Wales, Australia) personnel officer, Jo played a key role in WICEN's major emergency activations during the 1991 severe Sydney storm and the 1994 North Sydney -Central
Coast bushfires. <br>
Jo was a prominent member of the amateur radio community, most notably as the historian of the Wireless Institute of Australia (NSW) and coordinated mission control radio communications with Dick Smith VK2DIK on his record breaking hot air balloon flight across
Australia.<br>

May 1995 de Roger, G3LDI wrote: Jo is very active on packet radio and has about three or four systems running on several frequencies. One of the very neat ideas in her shack is the ability to be able to walk round to the rear of the equipment to change cables,
etc. This takes away all the hassle associated with the wires at the back of transceivers, etc.<br>
Incidentally, Jo also runs one of the most comprehensive callbook systems that I have ever seen. Admittedly it only covers Australia, but it takes up all those books you can see in on her shelves. The reason for the size of the system is that if you looked
up a callsign, it gives not just the name and address, but a potted life -history and photograph of the person. It has taken Jo years to accumulate all this information.<br>

<b>WALES TO WAHROONGA </b> 22 September 1918,<br>
In the Northern Welsh town of Waunfawr the Australian Prime Minister William Morris Hughes outlined a message for Senatore Guglielmo Marconi to send to Australia by wireless. This was to be the first direct wireless message sent from the United Kingdom to Australia
and the recipient was Mr Ernest Thomas Fisk who had an experimental wireless station in the attic of Lucania; his residence in Wahroonga. (northern suburbs of Sydney)<br>
Since that historic day, a monument has been erected and unveiled in December 1935.<br>
On September 22 1993 the Wahroonga Amateur Historical Radio Society, call sign VK2WAH, commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the Marconi/Fisk radio transmission at the site, "Lucania". Later, wireless contact was made from the Wahroonga home of Mrs. Jo Harris,
VK2KAA, with the Dragon Amateur Radio Club in Wales, operating from the Welsh site of the Marconi transmitter and using the amateur call sign GB2VK.<br>

90th Year of Radio Communication UK to Australia: At 1100hrs (AEST) on Monday 22nd September 2008, Sydney radio amateurs and members of the local community gathered at the Fisk Memorial outside the former house of Sir Ernest Fisk, at Wahroonga in Sydney, to
commemorate the 90th anniversary of the first directed wireless messages from the UK to Australia. The week's celebrations were conducted by the Wahroonga Historical Radio Association, the Hornsby and Districts Amateur Radio Club and the Ku-ring-gai Historical
Radio Society. Jo Harris VK2KAA gave a short talk and played a recording of a speech by Guglielmo Marconi,<br>

On Saturday 22nd September 2018, centenary celebrations were held at the monument.<br>
Jo Harris OAM and Geoff Little from the Ku-ring-gai Historical Society were congratulated for commemorating this occasion including the re-enactment of receiving the Morse Code message before a crowd of 400 strong locals and dignitaries at the monument outside
Lucania.<br>
<br>
GB2VK is the callsign used by the Dragon Amateur Radio Club each year, to celebrate this anniversary. They operate from the site of the old Long Wave Transmitting Station at Waunfawr on the hillside above Caernarfon in north west Wales.</div>

We regret to inform you of the sad demise of Smt. Annam Raghavi, VU3WZH, of Hyderabad, India on 21 August 2026.<br>
Smt. Raghavi had been a Governing Council Member of NIAR since 21 June 2023. An Electronics & Communications graduate, she was working in the IT industry.<br>
She participated in several Ham Radio events, including Ham Meets, contests, SSTV activities from the ISS, and various programmes conducted by NIAR and other organisations.<br>
Beyond amateur radio, she was a talented Kuchipudi dancer, model and painter. A few years ago, she was selected as Mrs. Hyderabad. She also conducted interviews for YouTube channels and television media on socio-political issues from time to time.<br>
She is survived by her husband, Siva, VU3EEL, and son, Poshan.<br>
Her vibrant presence, talents and contributions will be greatly missed by her family, friends and the amateur radio fraternity. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. May her soul rest in peace. <br>
