During April we celebrate World Amateur Radio Day, Marconi Day and Morse Code Day, all part of ICT. While IT deals primarily with computer hardware, software, and networking technologies, ICT includes not only these technologies but also communication technologies
such as telegraph, telephone, radio and television.<br>
Doreen Bogdan-Martin (Amateur Radio callsign KD2JTX) took office as Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 1 January 2023. Here she talks about Girls in ICT:
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAKFIiwc_5s&t=25s" id="OWA92bc051c-824d-e6a0-750b-f19017ad088b" class="OWAAutoLink" data-auth="NotApplicable">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAKFIiwc_5s&t=25s</a></span><br>
<br>
<b>History and Evolution of ICT</b><br>
The concept of ICT (information and communications technology).can be traced back to the 19th century with the development of the telegraph and the telephone. These two inventions revolutionized the way people worked and interacted socially by making it possible
for one person to communicate with another person in a different location in real or near-real time.<br>
In the middle of the 20th century, radio and television introduced the concept of mass communication, and by the end of the century, the internet had become a mainstream tool for communication, commerce and entertainment. Its use continued to grow rapidly in
the following years, revolutionizing the way people work and digitally transforming the way people communicate.<br>
<br>
<b>International Girls in ICT Day - April 25 , 2024</b><br>
This year’s theme for the Girls in ICT day celebrations is “Leadership“, to underscore the critical need for strong female role models in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.<br>
Although women now fill 40% of high-skill occupations globally, their participation in ICT-related fields continues to be low.<br>
Women are nearly absent from software development, engineering, technology research, academia as well as at the highest levels of policy making. They also tend to leave science and technology jobs at higher rates than men.<br>
While there is a leadership gender gap in every industry, the largest gaps are found in the STEM fields. Women in ICT often find themselves in junior or support roles rather than in managerial roles, with little opportunity for advancement. They are also less
likely to hold an executive position, become ICT entrepreneurs, or be represented among science and technology policymakers.<br>
To thrive in STEM, girls and young women must be exposed to women in leadership positions, fostering inspiration and breaking down barriers that hinder their progress. The Girls in ICT Day 2024 theme aims to address these challenges, encouraging empowerment
and leadership development for a more equitable future in STEM.<br>

<b>YL event OL88YL Czech Republic Invitation</b><br>
Dear YLs, we look forward to seeing you at the next event in the Czech Republic. We are allowed to use the first class contest station OK5Z. There is the possibility to participate for one or more days.<br>
I accept registrations with pleasure at <a href="mailto:hb9fpm@uska.ch" id="OWA521b7622-29a1-e749-1327-d4566ecfee21" class="OWAAutoLink" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">

<b>YL Meet - Czech Republic Aug 4 -10, 2024</b><br>
Dear Yls - We are pleased to inform you about the next YL event in the Czech Republic. We will be able to use the first-class OK5Z Moravian Contest Group station for 7 days. The station is located near Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. The
3* hotel in Náměšť nad Oslavou is only a few kilometres by car from the radio station. Ideally, transport to the contest station and back to the hotel should be by your car or via car-sharing together with the other participants.<br>
The hotel costs for one person/per night, including breakfast, are around CZK 1,200<br>
(= ~ EUR 48,11). Other hotels are also available in the neighbourhood if a different category is required. There is the individual possibility to take part in the event for one, several days or the whole week. OM as a companion is of course very welcome.<br>
Our activities will be accompanied by a professional video cameraman and photographer and recorded on modern data carriers.<br>
In addition to the pure radio activities (a maximum of five YLs can operate simultaneously on different bands/modes), we have also planned workshops for the first time:<br>
How do I set up a station for digi-modes (e.g. RTTY) and how do I operate in an RTTY contest?<br>
How do I operate the Fox/Hound mode (FT8) in DXpedition traffic? Specialities?<br>
We will build a 20m dipole together that every YL can take home with them<br>
How do I solder an N/PL-connector to a coaxial cable?<br>
<br>
The hosts will also give us selected presentations of their DXpeditions to Africa.<br>
SOTA (summits on the air), flora and fauna (OKFF) activations will round off the varied<br>
programme. We assume that there will be something for everyone.<br>
We will provide sporadic updates on the further development of the event in suitable media such as the USKA website, Facebook, Instagram and QRZ.<br>
I will gladly accept registrations at <a href="mailto:hb9fpm@uska.ch" id="OWAe73ebca5-ed33-524c-057f-5bad6c9a20de" class="OWAAutoLink" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">

<b>Sue Jacob, GW7YLS </b> from Wales, UK </p>
<p style="direction: ltr; line-height: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; padding: 0cm;">
In the space of less than 18 months, Sue Jacob, GW7YLS, has passed all three amateur radio exams to become a fully licensed radio amateur. However, it was over 50 years ago that Sue first began her interest in the hobby.<br>
In the early 1970s Sue began listening to Radio Luxembourg, along with other European stations, on Medium Wave on a small green transistor radio. Soon after, her grandfather gave her younger brother, Graham, an old valve radio, which had Shortwave. Following
this, she soon became a Shortwave Listener sending off reception reports to broadcasting stations around the world and she loved getting back QSL cards. It was whilst tuning around the bands Sue came across SSB signals and soon became interested in amateur
radio.<br>
<br>
However, life then took over and her interest in the hobby was put on hold until April 2022 when Sue had retired and she came across her old equipment whilst having a clearout of the attic. This included a Medium Wave loop antenna, Trio R-2000, Sony ICF7600D
and a small ATU. Along with the equipment Sue found two photo albums full of amateur radio QSL cards. These included those of her friend Alan, G3YNI (now Silent Key), who Sue used to sit with whilst listening to QSOs with Alan’s friend Bob, GW3VXP in Penarth
on 80m and 160m.<br>
<br>
At the time Sue had wanted to take her exam but had difficulties with Morse code and chose not to pursue becoming licensed. However, in September 2022, having rediscovered her interest in the hobby, she learnt that the new licence structure no longer required
Morse, and could be taken in stages. Following this development, Sue soon set about preparing for her Foundation exam.<br>
<br>
Sue chose to use the Essex Ham online course and a month later passed with a score of 25/26, and soon got on the air waves. With her interest growing, in early 2023 she chose to do the fast-track intermediate course with the Online Amateur Radio Community and
passed in April 2023.<br>
<br>
Having looked into taking the next step and taking the Full Licence exam, Sue initially had reservations and considered it quite a jump in learning. However, having talked it through with Graham, who had taken his intermediate course with Bath-Based Distance
Learning (BBDL), they decided to take the plunge together and take the BBDL Full Licence Course. Sue found from the pre-course that it was exactly her style of tutoring/learning programme and was thrilled to discover in January 2024 that she had passed and
was now a fully licensed radio amateur.<br>
As for what’s next for Sue, she’s considering trying her hand at Morse!</p>
