Elric  as the brooding, anti-heroic, friend-slaying slave to his demonic sword is certainly in reaction  to the  heroes  that drive Tolkien's  work.  The contrast between  them adds interest to Elric as  a character and  his  adventures.  The same could be said in a way  of Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray  Mouser (which  I enjoy even more  than Elric)  with their dark comedy, drinking, wenching, and thieving. They play heavily off of Tolkien and  high fantasy  in general.
